Get out of the lab: OMSI Science Communication Fellowships

Oregon agriculture

The College of Science and University Outreach and Engagement are pleased to announce that OSU will host a cohort of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) Science Communication Fellowship program in the spring of 2016. OSU-affiliated graduate students, faculty, personnel and post-docs are invited to apply. The deadline for applications is Monday, December 7, 2015.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance and scholarship status by Monday, December 14.

Held primarily on OSU’s Corvallis campus, the Science Communication Fellowship program seeks to build the capacity of OSU-affiliated graduate students, faculty, personnel and post-docs in order to engage the public with OSU research. Specifically, Fellows will:

  • Participate in OMSI's Science Communication "Short Course," a series of four professional development workshops focused on building skills to effectively communicate with public audiences. Workshops are 3–4 hours each, spaced over the course of three to four months.
  • Collaborate with museum educators to develop a unique, hands-on activity and display representing each Fellow's work.
  • Participate in a minimum of three “Meet a Scientist” programs per year. The public programs take place on the second Saturday of each month and exclusively feature OMSI Fellows with their hands-on, table-top activities.

The OMSI Science Communication Fellowship program is an excellent way to fulfill broader impact and outreach goals required for grant-funded research currently underway at OSU.

Tuition for the program is $2,500 per participant. The College of Science, OSU's Office of Engagement and Outreach and the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry at OSU are offering a limited number of scholarships for the Spring 2016 cohort.
