Scholarship Dessert honors extraordinary students

The College of Science is pleased to recognize its outstanding scholarship students at the spring Scholarship Dessert on Thursday, May 23, 2019, 4 – 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union Lounge (1st floor, near Java Stop). The annual celebration provides an opportunity for our generous scholarship donors to meet and build connections with our science students that their philanthropy supports.

Students, alumni, friends, advisors and faculty will come together to enjoy delicious cupcakes, conversation and to honor the achievements of our 2019-20 scholarship recipients, and to thank our generous donors. A donor and a student will share how scholarships helped shaped their lives, followed by an interactive activity.

RSVP here.

In 2018-19, the College of Science awarded $930,000 in scholarships to 288 science students for merit, need and undergraduate research experiences. Thanks to the generosity of science alumni and friends, the College awarded a total of 346 college-level and departmental scholarships and summer research fellowships from among 737 applicants (does not include Presidential, Provost and other OSU Scholarships).

These students were a remarkable and diverse group.

  • 53% of them were women
  • 22% were also part of the Honors College
  • 41% were minority students
  • 45% of them worked during the academic year, nearly 8% worked more than 20 hours per week
  • 50% were first in their family to attend college

Scholarships enable the College to attract, retain and inspire top students, most of whom go on to high achieving careers in industry, graduate school, medical school and other professional programs after graduation. Oregon State’s financial need-based scholarships also help academically talented low-income and first-generation students from Oregon and elsewhere to stay and excel in college.
