I am thrilled that the College of Science has launched this new communication to share with you the impressive accomplishments of our students, faculty, researchers and alumni. During the past 18 months, I have met many of our outstanding alumni with vision and passion, which has definitely been one of the best parts of my job! I am continually inspired to hear about extraordinary accomplishments, discoveries and changes you have made. I am proud of you, and proud of our faculty and students!
As the year gets underway, I want to share some exciting plans in our key areas of distinction: marine studies, materials science and Big Data.
With OSU positioned to be a global leader in marine studies, the College is at the heart of this strategic initiative. We are hiring diverse faculty in marine studies, raising funds for students and faculty, and developing transformative, meaningful and memorable experiences for students.
Serving as the foundation for materials science in the College, the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (CSMC), a $20 million, NSF-funded research center, has spurred economic development in the region and throughout Oregon. OSU’s hallmark collaborative research environment combined with the College’s strengths in statistical, mathematical and computational sciences can position the university as an international leader in Big Data.
Next fall we will launch an MS in Data Analytics program to provide a multi-disciplinary education to help our students develop the analytical skills needed to transform data into practical knowledge.
The College is home to the life, physical, mathematical and statistical sciences. But we are all OneScience, conducting fundamental, curiosity-driven research as well as applied research to advance the sciences, enable discoveries and have a positive impact in Oregon, across the country and around the world. I hope you feel the IMPACT we are having.
