Impacting science and driving collaboration.

I am so proud of the recent accomplishments of our faculty, students and you, our alumni and friends. We have many extraordinary discoveries, accomplishments and news to celebrate. So sit back and enjoy the stories about all of the amazing news happening in Science.

When I think about our success, I think about our outstanding faculty. They are tireless master jugglers. I know their days begin early and end late, work runs into evenings and weekends, often keeping them away from their families. I am deeply grateful for all that they do every single day. They are the reason for our successes. So next time you see them, give them a big hug and a pat on the back.

Recently we celebrated teaching and advising excellence at our annual Winter Awards Ceremony. With a theme of mentorship, students and professors paid heartfelt tributes to their mentors who were instrumental in encouraging their passion for science and influencing their careers. I found the strong bonds and relationships between our students, faculty and alumni extremely touching. They showed that being a teacher or advisor is about inspiring people, supporting our students’ success and shaping the next generation of leaders.

The quality of our faculty and students’ research is astounding. As you’ll read, we are making a tremendous impact in marine studies, materials science and bioinformatics, while pushing toward a healthy economy, planet and people. Because science is the backbone of research and training at OSU, the College is ideally positioned with emerging data science intersecting all disciplines. Collaborative research is fostering harmony across campus.

Our alumni are strong leaders in science and are making significant contributions. I was excited to spend time recently with math alumnus Michael Waterman, one of the founders of computational biology and a renowned human genome theorist. Our alumni, you, are truly an inspiration to us.

What a fantastic time to be in Science@OSU! And thank you for all that you do.
